Is Penzu really safe to use?

Hello readers. Is Penzu safe to use? It is considered the most secure online journal site, surely it must be safe? However, now I think it is not  as safe as I first thought.

Penzu is an online journal which is designed to keep your secrets private and secure. It has 256-bit AES encryption, the same type of encryption as the United States Government uses. So it sounds perfectly safe. It also has a Legacy feature which allows anyone of your choosing to be able to have your Penzu journal after you pass away. It sounds amazing right? Well unfortunately, I think it might be too good to be true.

The person I was going to choose for my legacy after I pass away rejected the idea immediately, he (has a lot of experience with computers) said that it is a really bad idea. This is because when I put something on a website, like penzu.com or facebook.com (any website actually), the information I type is always transferred to the owners of Penzu, so even if a website says they have encryption, or an amazing security feature. I am sure they work, however, the owners of a website will always be able to see the content you post or write on their website, (even if the company or owner says they can’t, although, they may not read your content if the owners chooses not to). Also, if a hacker were able to intercept the information between you and a website through the Heartbleed Bug for example, then they will also be able to read any personal information you have.

In conclusion, nothing on the internet is 100% safe. (I am not trying to scare you from using the internet, I still use it too, just remember that nothing on the internet is 100% secure). This might be rather obvious, however, we all make stupid mistakes like post too much personal information on Facebook. This is not always a bad thing though, as this allows us to learn from our mistakes and makes us more careful in the future.

  1. I don’t trust it. I was using it as a ‘free” word processing program for writing until an entire day of writing disappeared and I had to pay for “pro” to retreive it. Not cool. Plus, I used it briefly as a journal over a year ago, and they still to this day email me with excerpts of what I wrote… WTF? How secure is that??

  2. This is a good article. Nothing on the internet is safe. I just use it to write down my thoughts but I definitely don’t fully depend on it. I got microsoft word or pen and paper for that.

  3. i dont like penzu anymore i use it to write stories like mostly fanfiction stuff im not an aspiring writer or anything i just do it as a hobby and i dont like other people reading that stuff the thought that the site owners even have the option to read my stuff at all ruins the site for me you cant trust anyone much less people you dont know anything about how am i supposed to just trust that the site owners wont look at what im doing on their site im not gonna lie if i was in that position curiosity would probably get the best of me the only question is what do i have to do physical journals are just as safe as penzu and i dont even know of any other sites basically i need to give up my hobby because i dont like other people reading my stuff and theres nothing i can do to make it so im the only one that can ever read them it kinda pisses me off i was having fun with it

  5. hi!,I really like your writing very a lot! proportion we communicate more approximately your post on AOL? I require an expert on this house to resolve my problem. May be that is you! Having a look forward to look you.

  6. I personally think it is safe, or at least safe enough for my needs. If you disable the “looking glass” feature (the feature that causes them to send you back entries that you have written in the past) then the only possible risk would be if someone broke into your email and got into your journal through that (but then again, there’s encryption preventing people from reading it if they hacked into it, and even if the Penzu staff wanted to look into it, but unfortunately only if you pay extra for this feature). And although the workers at Penzu have a statement that states they don’t look into journals unless they are forced to by law or you explicitly give them permission (mentioned on their site), and cannot enter it if you loose your encrypted password, it IS always a good idea to play it safe and not put any extremely personal info anyway.

I see Penzu journals as filling a much-needed niche when it comes to journals and privacy that not all real journals can fulfill. If you have secrets or information that the public wouldn’t really care about but people in your personal life might, and you are willing to pay the extra for additional security features if needed, then Penzu is what you need. If you really could care less about people finding a physical journal of yours in real life, but don’t want the internet to know all about what goes on with you, then stick to physical journals.

  7. I’ve recently started a web site, the info you offer on this site has helped me greatly. Thank you for all of your time & work. “One of the greatest pains to human nature is the pain of a new idea.” by Walter Bagehot.

  8. Very good written story. It will be valuable to anybody who usess it, as well as yours truly :). Keep doing what you are doing – for sure i will check out more posts.

  9. I agree, Penzu is unsafe. It’s a huge scam telling people that their journals are secure because of their “military grade encryption”. Encryption means nothing if Penzu has the key. Take a journal website that doesn’t use encryption, but allows you to have it set to private. Like Tumblr for example. If someone hacked into Tumblr, they could read your journal despite it being set to private. Likewise, if someone hacked into Penzu they would be able to read your journal despite it being encrypted because they would have access to the key. The point I’m trying to make is that Penzu’s entire idea of selling encryption is a total ripoff and is no more secure than a Tumblr blog set to private.

  21. I have always wondered about Penzu. That is why I often send regards to the NSA and other intelligence agencies in my journal entries, just in case they are reading them. Also, if it is such a secure thing, they why does Penzu send me frequent emails saying, “here’s what you wrote last week” and then gives me a bit of my journal back to look at. You are telling me that all of that is private and nobody sees it other than me?
